Keep the Sparkle Alive: How to Clean and Care for Your Diamond Jewellery
A diamond is one of the hardest substances on Earth, but that doesn't mean it's invincible. Over time, everyday lotions, hairsprays, and even natural skin oils can create a film on your diamond, dulling its fire and brilliance.
To keep your jewellery looking as radiant as the day you first wore it, follow this simple guide to professional care at home.
1. The Simple Soak: Your Weekly Routine
You don't need expensive chemicals to clean a diamond. The best method is also the gentlest.
- The Solution: Mix warm water with a few drops of mild dish soap.
- The Soak: Let your jewelry sit in the solution for 20 to 40 minutes.
- The Scrub: Use a new, soft-bristled toothbrush (reserved only for your jewelry) to gently brush the stone. Pay close attention to the back of the diamond, where dirt and oil tend to collect most.
2. What to Avoid
- Harsh Chemicals: Never use bleach, chlorine, or abrasive cleaners like toothpaste. These can erode the precious metals in your setting and loosen the prongs holding your diamond in place.
- The Drain: Always plug the sink or use a bowl. Many diamonds have been lost to the "quick rinse" over an open drain.
3. Smart Storage
Diamonds are hard enough to scratch other gemstones — and even other diamonds.
- Separate Pouches: Store each piece in its own soft fabric pouch or a dedicated compartment in your jewellery box.
- Keep it Dry: Ensure your jewellery is completely dry before putting it away to prevent moisture from tarnishing the metal setting.
